Cost of Natural Gas

The rates it may charge to deliver natural gas are regulated by the Mass DPU.

Users of natural gas are billed for the DELIVERY of the gas and the COMMODITY, which is the natural gas itself. Although Berkshire Gas is the sole DELIVERY agent for the gas, customers do have the ability to choose an independent supplier of the natural gas COMMODITY. If customers do not choose an independent supplier of natural gas, Berkshire Gas will supply it. The COMMODITY rate is based upon the New York Mercantile Exchange price.

The DELIVERY rate is determined by the volume of gas (as measured in "therms") consumed. Generally speaking, commercial customers who use the most gas qualify for the lowest per-therm rate. Our current rates can be found by in our Rates and Tariffs page.

Customers who opt to have Berkshire Gas purchase the COMMODITY on their behalf are charged only what Berkshire Gas had to pay. THERE IS NO "MARK-UP" ON THE PRICE BERKSHIRE GAS PAYS. The second option is to contract with a "Marketer" of natural gas and have Berkshire Gas deliver the commodity.

Berkshire Gas encourages Commercial Customers to consider purchasing their gas from a Marketer because they can negotiate a set price for a 12 month (or more) period. That allows commercial customers to know what the natural gas portion of their energy budget will be. If a customer chooses to have Berkshire Gas purchase the commodity for him/her, any fluctuations in the gas costs will be passed on to the customer.

Here is the list of independent marketers currently approved to serve customers in the Berkshire Gas Service Territory
