Natural Gas Home-Heating Costs
In the Northeast, 55% of all homes are heated by natural gas and 32% use fuel oil (Electricity: 11%; Propane: 2%). Over time, the cost of heating a home with heating oil and natural gas are about the same. Although one or another may be less expensive at a particular time, Berkshire Gas does not recommend switching on the basis of price alone.
When doing a price comparison, it is best to evaluate the cost of natural gas versus the cost of your current energy source. For example, if you currently heat with oil and are thinking about switching to natural gas, you should compare the current price for a gallon of home heating oil to the equivalent price of natural gas.
Currently, the cost of natural gas for home heating is equivalent to $2.71 per gallon for heating oil, $1.82 per gallon for propane and $.08 per kilowatt-hour of electricity. As you have no doubt noticed, energy prices fluctuate with changes in weather, supply and market conditions.
