Application process & information

Approval process

  1. You must be an existing Berkshire Gas customer.
  2. For customers:
    1. For Residential customers: Only the Legal Owner of the Property, or an authorized legal party, can request rental equipment from Berkshire Gas. We cannot rent to tenants, rent-to-own habitants, or non-authorized parties.
    2. For Commercial customers: Commercial rental equipment can be requested if you rent a commercially licensed building for your business.
  3. We will review your payment history with us to see if your account has been approved for a rental

Payment criteria

  • You must have at least 10 payments over the last 12 months.
  • Your account can have no balance due greater than 60 days.
  • Your account cannot have, or have had, over the last 12 months, any disconnections or disconnection notices.
  • You cannot be under foreclosure or bankruptcy.
  • Your home cannot currently be on the market.

Installation process

  1. After approval, we will dispatch one of our partnered licensed & insured plumbing contractors to assess the property's installation needs. There is no cost to you.
  2. Leases:
    1. Residential leases: We will let you know if there are any additional charges you might be responsible for. The Berkshire Gas Equipment Rental Program allots every customer $600 for labor and minor materials and the cost of the equipment and permits. You must pay any costs beyond our allowance to the contractor at the time of the installation. This includes removal and disposal of your own equipment, any and all updates to your property that have to be made to bring the property to the Massachusetts Plumbing Code, and any amount exceeding our allotted amount of $600.
    2. Commercial leases: All commercial lease installations are fully paid for by the Berkshire Gas Equipment Rental Program, and lease prices are calculated per project.
  3. Sign & date the five-year lease agreement either prior to the installation or on the day of the installation. The agreement goes into effect after the water heater has been installed. During your lease, if the water heater breaks, or if there are any other issues with the equipment, you must contact Berkshire Gas to request service. Repair services are at no additional cost to you.

What happens after the 5‑year lease?

At the end of your lease, you can choose one of the following options:

  2. Buy out the unit: Pay the remaining book value and take ownership.
  3. Request a replacement assessment at any time: Upgrade to a new unit if eligible.
  4. Have the unit removed: We’ll remove and dispose of the equipment at no charge.

Please note: This is not a rent‑to‑own program. Berkshire Gas remains the owner of the equipment unless it is bought out or removed.

  2. Buy out the unit: Pay the remaining book value and take ownership.
  3. Request a replacement assessment at any time: Have the unit assessed to be replaced with a new unit at no cost anytime until the unit hits 8 years old.
